B'nai Emet -> Messages

After the terrorist attacks, we are all searching for words to express our grief and hope. Some readers may find the following texts, prayers, and meditations to be helpful. Please share with us through info@bnaiemet.org any thoughts and writings that have been meaningful to you.

The Days of Awe

God of our ancestors, as we experience the days of awe, we gather in shock and horror at the events of this week. During these days of awe, we pray for your guidance so that we may respond to this tragedy from within the values of our Jewish tradition. We pray: We pray for refuah shlelemah, a complete healing of body and spirit for the survivors and their families. We pray that the souls of those who perished be bound up in the bonds of eternal life and that their memories be for a blessing. We pray that in the coming year You bestow upon us and all people everywhere berakha and shalom, blessing and peace. May God bless us and guard us and grant peace.

Before Kaddish

On Shabbat we would light two candles,
One for remembering Shabbat
And one for observing Shabbat.
Tonight we light these two candles.
This one is for Building One,
And this one for Building Two.
This one is for the Pentagon,
And this one is for Pittsburgh.
This one is for those on the American Airline flights,
And this one for those on the United Airline flights.
This one for the hundreds of firefighters,
And this one for the hundreds of police.
This one for all the men,
And this one for all the women.
This one for all the girls,
And this one for all the boys.
This one for our luck running out,
This one for the New York skyline,
This one for the walking wounded,
This one for the critically wounded.
This one for the survivors,
This one for the dead.
This candle for Building One.
This candle for Building Two.

Psalm 20

May Adonai answer you in time of trouble, may the God of Jacob be your strength.  May Adonai send you help from God’s sanctuary, sustaining you from Zion.  May Adonai remember all your offerings and accept your sacrifices, granting your heart’s desires, fulfilling all your hopes.  We shall sing of Your victory, we shall acclaim the glory of our God.  May Adonai fulfill all that you ask.  Now I know that Adonai delivers the anointed.  Adonai will answer from God’s heavenly abode, bringing victory with mighty deeds.  Some trust in chariots, others in horses, but we honor the name of Adonai.  They stumble and fall, but we rise and stand firm.  Oh God, deliver us!  Answer us, Sovereign, when we call.

 A Psalm of David.

We Weep; We Search

We weep for the pain of all those who have suffered and died.  How long and intense was their suffering!  We feel anger against those who have caused these tragedies.  Adonai, protect us from our vengeful feelings and turn our anger into love and concern for all of your innocent ones.

We search in vain for answers yet even in our profound grief, let the light from all who died continue to illumine our lives.  Let their lives be a beacon of goodness, tenderness, and concern.  Let their values continue to inspire us to deeds of grandeur and truth.

Adonai, provide comfort to all the grieving families and friends.  We will be your partners, Adonai, and shower your loved ones with your message of concern and consolation.
