The Sound of the Shofar

Throughout the month of Elul, hear the sound of the Shofar at the 7:30 a.m. minyan.  The tradition of sounding the Shofar each morning through the month of Elul derives from a midrash (Pirkei d’Rebbe Eliezer 15) which states that the Shofar is blown each day of Moses’s final journey on Mt. Sinai to remind the people that he was alive, though absent.

Israel recognizes that this is a unique grace period, a time when the heavens are open to our repentance and prayer.  By sounding the Shofar, we arouse God’s Attributes of Mercy even as it focuses us to prayer.  A symbiotic relationship occurs.

And the letters of “Elul” (Alef-Lamed-Vav-Lamed) coincide with the loving phrase, “Ani L’dodi V’dodi Lee,” I am to my beloved and my beloved is mine.”  God and the Jewish people.  Husbands and wives.  A time for marriage.  A time for reconciliation.
