B'nai Emet -> Messages -> Conservative Jewish Commitment -> 2002Tuesday, April 16, 2002Yom HaZikaronTuesday, April 16, 2002, 4 Iyar, is observed annually as Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day. The months since September 11, 2001, have been filled with suicide/homicide bombers. Children, teenagers, adults, and Israel’s Defense Forces’ men and women have been murdered brutally by Palestinian terrorists. In pizza parlors and cafes, at Bat Mitzvah celebrations and at a Pesach Seder, in supermarkets and department stores, our beloved Israel has been viciously attacked. An act of tzedaka to Israel, to affirm the value of life and to recall the memory of those who died at the hands of terror, is a Jewish way to declare…we choose life! And Wednesday, April 17, 2002, 5 Iyar, is Yom HaAtzmaut, Israeli Independence Day, marking Israel’s 54th anniversary—a day of celebration, even if the tone is somber and reflective. In many congregations, the Psalms of Hallel are added at Shacharit, as well as a special Torah and Haftarah reading. Don’t miss B’nai Emet’s morning minyan on Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. for our own observance of Yom HaAtzmaut. What a perfect time to perform an act of tzedaka in honor of our beloved Israel.
