Early Childhood

B'nai Emet Early Childhood Department is licensed by the State of Minnesota to educate 100 children, ages 16 months through five years, in age-appropriate classes. Preschool classes are held 9:15 to 12:45 weekday mornings from September through May. Our daycare hours supplement the preschool day, opening at 7:30 a.m. daily and closing at 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 4:00 p.m. on Friday. All B'nai Emet Synagogue congregants have priority in registration; however, the program is open to the entire community. The Summer Early Childhood Department Day Camp (Camp Ahava, "Love") is open the same hours as our year-round program during ten weeks each summer.

While helping the children develop socially, emotionally, intellectually, and physically, we constantly strive to help each child have repeated successes. This encourages even more growth, curiosity, and interest in progressively greater challenges. We strive to instill a love of learning within the classroom with all of our stimulating activities, leading to incredible growth and creative learning experiences. We're interested in helping each child develop a positive self-image, because good feelings of self worth lead to the realization that anything can be learned. Our celebration of Jewish Holidays at a child's level gives the children a comfortable feeling concerning their Judaism.

All B'nai Emet staff members are experienced Early Childhood professionals who participate in a continuous program for in-service education and studies for professional advancement. This keeps us alert to the ever-changing needs of today's families.

For a tour of the facility or registration materials, contact: Marilyn Richter, Director of Early Childhood Education at 952-927-8443 weekday mornings.

Shabbat School - B'resheet

A Shabbat morning program for children under the age of 10. Age-appropriate supervision and activities are provided for everyone, including games, snacks, a children's service, and more.

Shabbat School

B'nai Emet's Shabbat School program is designed to teach pre-bar and bat mitzvah students important synagogue skills that they can use throughout their Jewish adult lives. Children are enrolled in Shabbat School approximately three years before their bar/bat mitzvah (usually at age 10 or in the fifth grade). Shabbat School is in session from early autumn to Shavuot and meets on Shabbat mornings from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Shabbat School's first year, Alef (ages 10 to 11), is devoted to Siddur, concepts of prayer, an introduction to Torah reading, and an in-depth study of prayers from the Musaf and Torah services.

During the second year, Bet (ages 11 to 12) the student continues learning specific prayers and the Ta'amaey Hamikrah (Torah reading notes).

The third year, Gimel (ages 12 to 13, the bar/bat mitzvah year) emphasizes mastery of the Torah and Musaf services, learning specific Torah portions for the student's bar/bat mitzvah celebration, and, when possible, preparing to participate in Kabalat Shabbat and the Shaharit service.

Prozdor, a class for post-bar/bat mitzvah students (ages 13 to 15), provides opportunites for youth to study additional prayers; participate in choral readings, Junior Choir, and Torah reading; and take part in an intense tutor and associate tutor training program for those interested in teaching in the Shabbat School.

Our goal is to encourage students to be active participants in the life of our synagogue. Once they have mastered the skills for their own bar/bat mitzvah celebrations, post-bar/bat mitzvah youth serve as role models for the younger students. The Shabbat School faculty consists primarily of teenagers who are graduates of our program.

College Outreach

The purpose of this committee is to keep in touch with the young adults (up to age 25) of our congregation that are either away or at home, in school, or working. Among our projects are holiday packages sent to college students, and a citywide directory to help young adults keep in touch with their friends.

Adult Education

Through classes, workshops and special events, the B'nai Emet Adult Education Committee seeks to educate our members and the community about Judaism, Jewish history, and Jewish culture.

A highlight of our year is the Festival of Jewish Awareness, held each April, an evening of assorted mini-classes. Through the years, the committee has also hosted a variety of nationally-known speakers, including Rabbi Harold Kushner, Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan and CNN's Wolf Blitzer.

Meetings are held monthly, and the committee welcomes new members. If you'd like to help build a vibrant and exciting program of adult education events, join us! Call the synagogue office for details.
