B'nai Emet -> Departments -> Education Programs -> Early Childhood

The goals we at B’nai Emet Early Childhood Education Department have are few but, nevertheless, lofty.

While helping your child develop socially, emotionally, intellectually, and physically, we constantly strive to help him or her have repeated successes.  This encourages even more growth, curiosity and interest in progressively greater challenges.

We strive to instill a love of learning within the classroom with all of our stimulating activities, leading to incredible growth and creative learning experiences.  We're interested in helping your child develop a positive self-image, because good feelings of self worth lead to the realization that anything can be learned!

Our celebration of Jewish holidays at a child’s level gives your child a comfortable feeling concerning their Judaism.  All B’nai Emet staff members are experienced Early Childhood professionals who participate in a continuous program for in-service education and studies for professional advancement.  This keeps us alert to the ever-changing needs of today’s families.

B’nai Emet’s Family Childhood Education program is open to all children regardless of race, nationality, or creed, who may benefit from our program.

We hope that you find the policies and procedures contained in this handbook helpful to your family.  Updated information, supplemental notes, and newsletters will be sent home with your child regularly.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Early Childhood Education Department, please feel free to contact me.  We welcome suggestions, comments, and feedback as well as financial and moral support.

Get involved, be a part of our program!

Sincerely,

Marilyn K. Richter

Come In And See Us Sometime

At B’nai Emet, parents are welcome, and encouraged, to drop in anytime.  We welcome and encourage parents and grandparents to visit, but please give us the first three weeks of classes to settle down.  We have two-way mirrors, and we find these observation windows get a lot of use during the first few weeks of school each fall.

It’s best to call ahead if you plan to visit because your child may be on a field trip or at the park.  If you call, the teacher can also tell you the best time to come.  In general, we recommend 10:00 a.m. visits.  Visitors are asked to stop by the Early Childhood office upon arrival where they will be directed to the appropriate classrooms.  We hope families will visit often.

Join In The Fun

The preschool has a great, active Parents Group.  You will be contacted in the fall and invited to participate.  The Parents Group offers hands-on workshops as well as educational speakers on parenting issues, graduation, spaghetti dinner, and Young Family Service participation.

Let’s Be Stars

In the event pictures are taken for publicity, or any research is being conducted in the Early Childhood Department, you will receive a letter detailing the activity and a permission form which must be returned to your child'’ teacher before he or she can participate.

Do Unto Others . . .

In order to help our children learn appropriate behavior and self control, our Early Childhood staff uses only positive discipline techniques and behavior guidance.  Based upon our knowledge of child development, our responsibility as teachers is to guide children in learning appropriate behavior based on his/her own individual development level.

We use a variety of positive guidelines to help control negative behavior (such as redirection and establishing a positive behavior model); we help children establish limits for their behavior; and help children handle negative feelings through acceptable outlets and alternatives.

Your Concerns Are Serious Business

Should a problem arise between a parent and the Early Childhood Education Department, every effort will be made to first handle the problem directly with the staff member(s) in question, and also with the Early Childhood Education Director’s assistance and intervention, if necessary.  Should the issue fail to be resolved satisfactorily or fall beyond the Early Childhood Education Director’s jurisdiction, the parent may bring the grievance in writing to the Early Childhood Education Committee at its next regularly scheduled meeting.  The decision shall be made within a two-month time frame.  The decision of the Early Childhood Education Committee is final.

We’ve Got You Covered

B’nai Emet Synagogue carries more than $100,000/300,000 in liability insurance.  All Early Childhood Programs are fully covered under B’nai Emet Synagogue Liability Insurance.

The Preschool staff is required by law to report all cases of suspected child abuse and neglect.

We at B’nai Emet Early Childhood Department are pleased to offer your child a smoke-free environment.

How Old Are You Now?

Birthday celebrations must be scheduled one week in advance.  Please contact your child’s teacher to arrange for your child’s special day.

Treats must be nutritious, meet with kashrut standards and also checked against class allergy lists.  It’s nice to receive gifts on your birthday, but we also want to teach our children to share.  Instead of treats, many parents make a small contribution to the school.  The Early Childhood Education Director then purchases something special such as a record, book, or poster in the child’s name to be presented to his/her class in honor of the birthday.

We Have Lots of Little Ones

Children are intrigued and can learn a great deal by watching and caring for a classroom pet.  Throughout the year, teachers may provide small animals for B’nai Emet.  Children ARE NOT allowed to bring their family pets at any time.  If your child is allergic to any pet, make sure to note it on your application form.

We’re Prepared

The children in the Early Childhood Education Department have one fire drill per month and one tornado drill per month during the tornado season (April through September).  These drills prepare our children so that they’re familiar with our emergency procedure.

You’ve Made the Right Choice

Members of B’nai Emet Synagogue are given priority registration for enrollment in the Early Childhood programs through February.  Families with children currently enrolled in our programs have second priority followed by the community at large.  In March, fall class lists are completed in sequential registration order.

A non-refundable registration fee for Preschool classes must be paid at the time of registration.  Enrollment is not complete in any Early Childhood program until the deposit is paid in full.  Upon receipt of all fees, each child’s name is placed on a class list.  Each child is enrolled for the entire program year (September through May).

Applications may be requested and returned to the Early Childhood Education Department beginning in late December prior to the following school year.  All questions concerning enrollment or re-enrollment may be directed to the Early Childhood Director.

We’d Like to Thank Our Sponsor
