Set-up of the Chanukkiyah (Menorah):
- On the first night of Chanukkah, two candles are put into the Chanukkiyah:
one in the space for the shamash (the "helper" candle, used to light the
others), and one in the row of eight "regular" candles - in the first space on
the right-hand side.
- Each subsequent night, an additional candle is added. The
Chanukkiyah is filled from right to left. For example, on the second
night, candles are put in each of the two right-hand spaces in the row.
- The Chanukkah candles are always lit by the shamash. In other words,
light the shamash with a match or lighter (or with another shamash, if more
than one Chanukkiyah are being lit), and light the Chanukkah candles only with
the shamash.
- On the first night, the one candle on the right-hand side is the only
candle (other than the shamash) to be lit. On subsequent nights, light
the candles in a row, beginning with the "newest" candle (e.g., on the second
night, begin with the second candle from the right). The rule is simple:
Fill the Chanukkiyah from right to left; light the candles from left to right.
- The candles should be lit after appropriate b'rakhot (blessings) are
recited (see below).
B'rakhot for Lighting the Chanukkah Candles
Each night of Chanukkah, recite the first two b'rakhot below (on the first
night of Chanukkah only, recite all three b'rakhot) before lighting the
Chanukkah candles.
