New Year Reflections

November, 2001

The last time that I wrote an article for the Scroll was before September 11.  Since that time, in one way or another, all of our lives have changed.  For some, the change occurred in very small ways; perhaps for others in much larger ways.  Since the timing of this horrible national tragedy occurred just prior to our High Holy Days, it gave us even more reason than usual to re-examine our lives and perhaps adjust our own priorities.  Certainly it made all of us do a lot more thinking.

As we came together to attend services, I was very moved by our congregation standing together singing America the Beautiful and Hatikvah.  It was a moment that I will remember for a long time.

One of the results of September 11 was an obvious heightened concern for safety and security.  As you may have noticed, extra security people were on duty during the High Holy Days to give a greater sense of comfort to our congregants.  I also want to thank our administrative staff and volunteers who aided the security officers in checking tickets and helping to create a safe environment for us all.

As safety concerns are still on the minds of many, please know that B’nai Emet will take all reasonable measures to ensure the safety of our congregants and building.  One of these measures implemented is that anyone entering the building during weekdays is required to check in at the main office to obtain a visitor’s pass.  This will give greater comfort to our preschool staff and parents whose children spend many hours in our building.  Other appropriate measures are being looked into and will soon be put into place.

I also want to thank our congregants at this time.  Many times people are asked to give money.  They respond and often never hear anything more about it.  On Yom Kippur, you were asked to give through our Yizkor appeals.  I am very proud to announce that over $15,000 was raised.  This is especially significant since that is the same amount raised in prior years when our congregation was larger.  All of you who gave should be very proud of your participation in this appeal.  Your involvement in this appeal and future fundraising efforts will enable us to offer the kinds of programs and services our congregants deserve.

Soon the Jewish new year of 5762 will meet the secular year of 2002.  May we all find it to be a year of health, happiness, and peace.

Alan Ingber
